In a commendable response to the growing mental health crisis in Eswatini, Lusito Wellness and Counselling has stepped up to offer essential support to university students. With the alarming rise in suicide cases across the country, especially among tertiary students, Lusito is providing free counselling sessions aimed at addressing this urgent issue.
A Proactive Response to the Mental Health Crisis
Lusito Wellness and Counselling’s initiative comes at a time when mental health problems, particularly depression and anxiety, are soaring among university students. Pressures from academics, financial struggles, peer dynamics, and adjusting to new learning environments are contributing factors to the increasing cases of mental health issues, which, if untreated, can lead to tragic outcomes.
Nokunceda Myeni, the CEO of Lusito, has been vocal about the need for swift intervention. “We cannot ignore the numbers any longer. Suicide is claiming the lives of many of our young people, and tertiary students are particularly vulnerable due to the intense pressures they face,” Myeni stated in a recent interview.
Free Counselling Sessions for Tertiary Students
Lusito Wellness has launched an initiative that provides free counselling to university students across Eswatini. The goal is to offer students a safe space to talk about their struggles and get professional help without the added burden of financial costs.
“We realized that most students can’t afford counselling services. That’s why we made the decision to offer these sessions for free,” said Myeni. “Mental health care should not be a luxury. It’s a basic need, especially in these times.”
A Response to the Alarming Suicide Rates
According to recent statistics, suicide cases in Eswatini have been on the rise, especially among young adults. Many students feel isolated, overwhelmed by academic expectations, and uncertain about their future prospects. Lusito’s initiative is designed to tackle these issues head-on by providing professional guidance and emotional support.
“I’ve seen firsthand how students are struggling,” Myeni shared during her visit to the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), where she recently delivered a lecture on Sociology. “The pressures they face are immense, and without proper mental health care, the results can be devastating.”
Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health
One of the most important elements of Lusito Wellness’ campaign is breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. Myeni has been actively promoting mental health awareness, encouraging students to seek help early, and emphasizing that there is no shame in asking for support.
“Many students are afraid to speak up about their mental health challenges because of the stigma that still exists,” she explained. “We want to change that. Seeking counselling is a sign of strength, not weakness.”
Building a Stronger Mental Health Support Network
Lusito Wellness and Counselling’s free sessions are just the beginning. The organization hopes to build a stronger mental health network within Eswatini’s universities and higher education institutions, working closely with schools to integrate more mental health resources on campus.
“We aim to partner with more universities and reach as many students as possible,” said Myeni. “Our vision is to create a culture where mental health is prioritized and students feel supported, not just academically, but emotionally as well.”
Looking Forward: Hope for the Future
As Lusito Wellness continues to expand its services, Myeni remains hopeful that this initiative will bring meaningful change to Eswatini’s mental health landscape. “We are at the beginning of a long journey, but I believe we are moving in the right direction. If we can save even one life, it will be worth it,” she concluded.
With free counselling sessions now available, Lusito Wellness and Counselling is providing a lifeline for students in need, giving them the tools to face their challenges and reclaim their mental well-being.
