In a major step toward promoting transparency and accountability in Eswatini’s public sector, the Eswatini Public Procurement Regulatory Agency (ESPPRA) and the Eswatini Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This collaboration signals a united front against corruption, particularly within public procurement, which is a critical area for the efficient use of public resources.

Strengthening the Fight Through Partnership

Corruption, particularly in procurement, poses significant risks to public trust and economic development. To tackle this, ESPPRA and ACC have committed to working together through coordinated efforts that include information sharing, joint training programs, and collaborative strategies aimed at detecting and preventing corrupt activities.

Speaking about the collaboration, ESPPRA Senior Compliance Officer Veli Ngwenya said, “Public procurement is one of the most critical areas for ensuring the effective use of public resources. By fostering a partnership with ACC, we take another stride towards building a more transparent and accountable public sector.”

United in Building an Ethical Public Sector

ESPPRA Chief Executive Officer Vusumuziwendvodza Matsebula echoed Ngwenya’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of this partnership in the fight against corruption. “This MoU is not just a formality,” Matsebula stated.

“It establishes a framework for cooperation that empowers us to take collective action against corruption, mitigate its risks, and uphold the highest standards of accountability that our citizens deserve.”

He added that public procurement is an area particularly vulnerable to corrupt activities, but through this partnership, they are determined to close the gaps that allow such practices to thrive.

Joint Efforts to Create Long-lasting Change

One of the key elements of this partnership is joint training, which will ensure that both ESPPRA and ACC personnel are equipped with the necessary skills to detect and prevent corrupt practices.

Matsebula noted, “Through joint training programs and coordinated efforts, we will work to prevent, detect, and respond to corruption in a timely and effective manner.”

This collaborative approach will also enable the two entities to exchange critical information that will strengthen their ability to act swiftly and decisively against unethical practices in procurement.

Restoring Public Trust Through Cooperation

Matsebula concluded by underlining the ultimate goal of this partnership: restoring public trust. “Our combined efforts will ensure that the procurement processes are transparent, accountable, and free from corruption.

This partnership strengthens our resolve to safeguard public resources and to guarantee that every cent benefits the citizens of Eswatini,” he said.

The partnership between ESPPRA and ACC is a powerful example of how collaboration can be a game-changer in the fight against corruption, setting a higher standard of governance for the future of Eswatini.
