A New Dawn for Eswatini’s Shiselweni Region: AfDB’s Vision for Agricultural Revolution

As Eswatini strives to reshape its agricultural sector, a beacon of hope is emerging in the Shiselweni Region. With the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB), the country is on the verge of an agricultural transformation that could redefine livelihoods and bolster economic growth. Led by Dr.

Wael Soliman, Principal Hydrologist at AfDB, a high-profile delegation recently visited key project sites, witnessing first-hand the progress of two landmark projects—the Lower Usutu Smallholder Irrigation Project Phase II (LUSIP II) and the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project (MNWAP).

Transforming Shiselweni: A Vision for the Future

Dr. Soliman’s optimism shines through as he reflects on the transformation unfolding in the Shiselweni Region, particularly with the development of the Mphakeni Dam—the heart of the MNWAP initiative.

The dam, alongside the River Diversion channel, is crucial for increasing water availability for agriculture, which will enable the region to transition from subsistence farming to commercial-scale production.

“The progress I have seen on-site has brought so much hope that Eswatini, particularly the Shiselweni Region, will be transformed,” said Dr. Soliman. “This infrastructure will not only boost agricultural productivity but also secure sustainable livelihoods for thousands of farmers.”

From Subsistence to Commercial Agriculture

One of the most profound shifts brought about by these projects is the transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture. Farmers in the region are no longer limited to growing food for survival; they are now diversifying their crops and producing for the market, securing stable incomes and enhancing food security in the region.

During the visit, the AfDB delegation engaged with farmers from the Ngcamphalala, Mngometulu, Myeni, and Matsenjwa communities—key beneficiaries of LUSIP II’s development efforts. These interactions underscored the life-changing impacts of the project.

Ngcamphalala farmer remarked, “Before LUSIP II, we struggled to produce enough for our families, but now we are growing different crops and selling them. This project has changed our lives.”

Sustainable Development at the Core

AfDB’s involvement in these projects goes beyond technical and economic considerations. Dr. Soliman emphasized the bank’s commitment to sustainable development, ensuring that the projects are not only designed to be environmentally sound but also socially inclusive.

“These projects are designed with a long-term vision in mind,” explained Dr. Soliman. “We are ensuring that the water infrastructure serves future generations and that the agricultural developments promote both environmental preservation and social equity.”

The Economic Ripple Effect

The potential economic impact of these projects is immense. The Lower Usutu Smallholder Irrigation Project and the Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project are expected to create thousands of jobs, increase agricultural exports, and boost Eswatini’s economy by enhancing the productivity of rural areas like Shiselweni.

The infusion of modern agricultural techniques, combined with secure access to water, will turn once-struggling communities into hubs of economic activity.

“We’re witnessing the start of an agricultural revolution in Eswatini,” Dr. Soliman stated. “This region has always had potential, and with the right infrastructure and support, it will soon be a key player in the nation’s agricultural output.”

A Bright Future Ahead

As the AfDB mission concluded its visit, the future for the Shiselweni Region and Eswatini as a whole looks increasingly bright. With the completion of the Mphakeni Dam and the success of LUSIP II, the region is set to experience unprecedented growth, transforming it into a model of rural development.

Reflecting on the far-reaching potential of these efforts, Dr. Soliman expressed his optimism: “Eswatini is on the verge of a major breakthrough. The progress here is not just about infrastructure—it’s about empowering people, securing livelihoods, and ensuring that the next generation inherits a more prosperous, resilient Shiselweni.”

The transformation of the Shiselweni Region through AfDB’s vision and investment marks a pivotal moment in Eswatini’s development journey, as the nation takes bold strides toward an agriculturally prosperous and sustainable future.
