As the world rapidly transitions into a digital-first economy, the demand for digital competencies continues to skyrocket. Yet, in many parts of the world, including Eswatini, there exists a significant gap between the skills required by employers and the training available to young people.
Recognizing this challenge, MTN Eswatini has taken bold steps to bridge this divide through its MTN Skills Academy, a transformative initiative designed to empower the youth with critical digital and financial skills.
Empowering Youth Through Free Digital Education
MTN Eswatini’s Skills Academy has provided over 2,500 free licenses to students across the country, giving them access to a wide range of online courses that equip them with in-demand digital and financial skills.
These courses, covering topics from software development and data analysis to social media management and financial literacy, are designed to prepare young people for the evolving job market.
“We launched the Skills Academy to help young people tap into the incredible opportunities of the digital age,” said the MTN CEO, represented by Evidence Ntshalintshali. “Our goal is to ensure that no one is left behind in this digital revolution, especially the youth who will shape the future of Eswatini’s workforce.”

With over 1,680 students already benefiting from the programme, it’s clear that MTN is making a substantial impact on closing the digital skills gap. The initiative is not just about education; it’s about creating sustainable career pathways for Eswatini’s youth.
Preparing for a Digital-Driven Economy
The digital economy is no longer the future—it’s the present. With businesses and industries increasingly relying on technology for operations and growth, having a digitally savvy workforce is critical. However, many young people in Eswatini face barriers to accessing the necessary training to succeed in this environment.
This is where the MTN Skills Academy steps in, providing a solution that not only educates but also prepares participants for real-world opportunities.
Through its range of courses, the Skills Academy teaches participants practical, industry-relevant skills that make them more competitive in the job market.
“I learned how to use data to make better business decisions,” said one of the programme’s participants. “These are skills I never thought I’d have access to, and now I feel confident in pursuing a career in digital marketing.”
Driving Sustainable Growth in the Workforce
Beyond digital literacy, the programme also focuses on financial skills that are crucial for sustainable personal and business growth. The combination of digital and financial literacy helps participants not only find employment but also develop entrepreneurial mindsets that can spur new business opportunities within Eswatini.
“The skills I’ve gained go beyond just understanding how to use a computer,” said another participant. “I’ve learned how to manage my finances and think strategically about how to grow my small business.”
This holistic approach to skills development is what sets the MTN Skills Academy apart from traditional educational programmes. It doesn’t just teach theory; it gives participants the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
Breaking Barriers with Access to Free Internet
A key component of the programme’s success is the accessibility it provides to students. Through partnerships with Junior Achievement Eswatini, incubation hubs like those in Ludzeludze and Nhlangano offer free internet access, allowing students to take courses without the usual barriers that come with expensive data costs.
This ensures that students from both urban and rural areas have equal opportunities to learn and grow.

“One of the biggest challenges for many young people in rural areas is access to the internet,” said Ntshalintshali. “By providing free internet access at our incubation hubs, we are breaking down those barriers and creating opportunities for all young people to participate in the digital economy.”
A Growing Impact: Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead
The success of the MTN Skills Academy was recently celebrated at an awards ceremony, where 212 certificates were awarded to participants who had completed various courses. Among them, 87 certificates were earned by students from the Ludzeludze and Nhlangano incubation hubs.
This achievement not only reflects the dedication of the participants but also showcases the programme’s tangible impact on the future workforce of Eswatini.
As more students continue to enroll in the programme, MTN Eswatini remains committed to its vision of fostering a digitally equipped generation. “We believe that through education and empowerment, we can help build a better and more sustainable future for Eswatini,” Ntshalintshali added.
The Future of Eswatini’s Workforce
As Eswatini continues its journey toward digital transformation, initiatives like the MTN Skills Academy play a vital role in ensuring the country’s youth are prepared for the opportunities and challenges ahead. By providing free access to essential digital and financial skills, the programme is not just filling a gap—it’s shaping the future of Eswatini’s workforce.
For the youth of Eswatini, the message is clear: the digital future is here, and with the right skills, they can lead the way.
